After your little bundle of joy has arrived, you’ll spend time wondering about the best place for your baby to sleep. Well, for any parent an infant’s safety is always paramount. Experts recommend that the best and safest place for your baby to sleep is in a crib, in the same room.
Sharing a bed with a baby can endanger the baby’s life and is not advisable. Bed-sharing increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) due to overheating, airway obstruction or a fatal sleeping accident. The fact is that adult beds are not designed to keep babies safe.
A few other reasons for not sharing a bed with your baby:
❏ Sleep Onset Association (A condition in which a child associates their ability to fall asleep with something in their environment or even a person)
❏ Overlaying by a parent, sibling or another adult sharing the bed
❏ Entrapment or getting wedged between the mattress and another object
So, give your baby space by not sharing a bed and keep your baby’s crib in the same room where you sleep. A crib with a firm mattress is recommended for babies. Always place your baby to sleep on her/his back. Keep soft objects, toys and crib bumpers out of your baby’s sleep space.
